How do you track travel spending in euros or dollars against your home currency?

Last updated: November 3, 2026

In short: If you bought foreign currency for a trip, keep it in its own currency account and record your spending from that account, in euros or dollars. Wiozen Ledger writes each expense's value in your main currency when you save it. You either enter that value yourself or leave it empty; if empty, the rate on that date or the closest earlier one is used. That way the monthly report and budgets count your euro spending in your main currency. If you give every expense the same tag, the trip's total cost appears on one page. Spending on a card in your main currency is entered on the card's account with the amount your bank charges.

A separate currency account for the trip

On the Accounts page, open Add an account or card. For foreign cash in hand, choose the type Other (currency, gold box…); for a foreign currency bank account, you can choose Bank. Pick Euro or US dollar as the currency and give the account a name such as “Trip euros”. If you need another currency, such as pounds, add it with Add currency in the Currencies section of Settings.

The account's balance stays in euros. In the net worth on the dashboard it is converted into your main currency at that day's rate. Euros left over from the trip stay in this account, and their value moves with the rate.

Recording a currency exchange as a transfer

Changing your money into euros is not an expense; the money moves from one account to another. You record it on the Transfer / currency exchange page. Choose your main account under From and the euro account under To, then type what you paid under Amount sent and the euros you got under Amount received. The rate comes from those two amounts: if you paid 15,000 TL and got 400 euros, you bought each euro for 37.50 TL.

A transfer does not enter the income and expense totals, so it does not swell your monthly report. If you paid the exchange office or bank a separate fee, enter it as its own expense.

Recording spending from the euro account

When you pick the euro account on the New entry screen, you type the amount in euros and one more field appears in the form: the equivalent in your main currency, such as TL equivalent. If you leave it empty, the rate on that date or the closest earlier one is used; rates are kept on the Rates page. If there is no rate at all for that date, the entry is not saved and you are asked to type the equivalent yourself.

Typing the equivalent yourself means counting the expense at the rate you actually paid. If you bought euros at 37.50 TL, a 20 euro meal gets 750 TL as its equivalent. If you leave it empty, the rate on the Rates page is used and the number comes out slightly different. Whichever you choose, stick with it for the whole trip; otherwise the total mixes two different rates.

The equivalent is written when you save the entry and does not change when the rate changes, unless you edit it. The monthly report and category budgets use this equivalent, so last year's holiday is not recalculated at today's rate. In the Transactions list, though, the expense shows in the account's own currency, in euros.

Spending on your home currency card

If you paid abroad with a credit card in your main currency, the bank converts the amount and writes it on your statement in that currency. Enter this expense on the card's account with the amount the bank charged; since the card account is in your main currency, no equivalent field appears. The bank may post the charge a few days later; meanwhile you can enter an approximate amount and correct the entry once you see the final one. The credit card guide explains how to follow the card's statement.

Seeing the trip's total

Give every expense on the trip the same tag, for example “Rome holiday”. You create the tag first on the Tags and projects page, then pick it on each entry under More on the New entry screen. The plane ticket goes under transport, the hotel and meals under their own categories; the categories stay as they are and the tag pulls everything together. Open the tag on the Tags and projects page to see the total spent in your main currency, a chart of the last 12 months and the tagged entries. The tags guide explains why a tag works better than a category here.

The plane ticket and hotel you paid from your main account before the trip go under the same tag. In the total, spending in your main currency and in euros shows together in your main currency. A currency exchange is a transfer, so it is not added to the tag's total, and the same money is not counted twice.

Leftover currency after the trip

If you changed the leftover euros back, make the same transfer in the other direction: euros sent from the euro account, and the amount received into your main account. If you decide to keep them, the account stays as it is and becomes part of your savings; the gold and foreign currency guide explains how to follow currency savings.

Which plan is it on?

Pro includes foreign currency accounts, transfers between accounts and tags. Every new account gets 14 days of Pro without a card; after that Pro is $12.99 a year or $1.99 a month in Türkiye and $39.99 a year or $6.99 a month elsewhere. The free plan has 1 account and 30 records a month. Details are on the pricing page. The free plan has one account, opened in your main currency; you can still enter travel spending there, but in your main currency and without tags.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change the home currency value of a euro expense later?
Yes. Open the entry and correct the equivalent field. The monthly report, budgets and tag total are worked out with the new amount.
Which rate is used if I leave the equivalent field empty?
The rate on the expense's date or the closest earlier one. Rates are kept on the Rates page; currency rates update by themselves once a day, and you can also enter them yourself.
Does a currency exchange show up as an expense in the monthly report?
No. It is recorded as a transfer from your main account to the euro account, so it counts as neither income nor expense. The expense is written when you spend the euros.
Can I set a separate budget for the trip?
Budgets go only on categories; a tag cannot have a limit. Compare the amount you set aside for the trip with the total on the tag's page yourself.
