Is there a budget app that records an expense when you say it out loud?
Last updated: November 1, 2026
In short: Yes. In Wiozen Ledger you tap the microphone in the Assistant and say “40 on gas”. Your words show up on screen as you speak; when you finish, the assistant picks out the amount, category, account and date and shows an entry card. Nothing goes into your ledger until you press Save. The app does not connect to your bank or pull in transactions; your ledger holds only what you say or type.
Step by step: your first voice entry
- Open the app. The assistant sits at the top of the dashboard; on a phone, the Assistant button in the middle of the bottom menu opens it too.
- Tap Speak. The browser asks for microphone access the first time; without it, recording does not start.
- Say the expense in one sentence: “40 on gas, credit card.” No special wording, just talk normally.
- Tap Stop recording. A recording lasts at most 30 seconds; anything after that is cut off. Once your voice is turned into text, the text goes to the assistant on its own.
- The assistant shows an expense card: $40.00, Transport, your card account, today's date. If it is right, press Save. If something is wrong, press Cancel and say or type the fix: “no, cash”.
How do the words appear while you talk?
While you record, the browser's own speech recognition writes your words on screen straight away, so you can see whether the sentence was heard right while you are still speaking. This preview works in Chrome, Edge and Safari. Firefox doesn't have the feature, so there the text appears only after you stop.
The final text the assistant reads does not come from that preview. When you stop, the audio is sent to the Wiozen API and transcribed there. If that transcription fails for some reason, the on-screen preview is sent instead, so what you said is not lost.
A recording shorter than half a second, or almost silent, is never sent; you see a “couldn't hear anything” message instead. Speech models sometimes invent sentences out of silence, such as “Thanks for watching”. Wiozen Ledger drops these known inventions, so a phone that starts recording in your pocket does not end up suggesting a nonsense entry.
What does the assistant work out, and what does it ask?
If you give no date, it uses today. Words like “yesterday” or “last Friday” become the actual day. With a single account it uses that one; with several, it asks which one unless your sentence makes it clear. It picks a category when the sentence clearly points to one, so “gas” goes to Transport. When it doesn't, it names two or three likely categories and asks.
It does not guess amounts. Say “bought some stationery” and it asks how much. The one exception is things you buy often: for something you have recorded at least twice before, like “bought coffee”, it suggests the last price you paid and marks it as an estimate on the card. The habits guide explains how.
An example: your ledger has Cash and Bank accounts but no credit card. You say “Spent 45 on groceries yesterday with my credit card.” The assistant says you have no credit card recorded and asks which account to use instead of making one up. When you answer “cash”, the card comes back as $45.00, Groceries, Cash, with yesterday's date.
Several entries in one sentence
Say “12 on lunch and 18 on a taxi tonight” and you get two separate cards, each confirmed on its own. One message proposes at most five entries. Income works the same way: “My salary came in, 3200.”
It does not record things that haven't happened. “I'm going to buy shoes for 90 tomorrow” gets no card; it asks you to tell it once you have bought them. Amounts are taken in the account's currency, so if you say “paid 50 euros” from a dollar account, it asks you to pick a euro account.
What the voice assistant can't do
- It does not connect to your bank or card and does not read statements. Every entry comes from your voice, your typing or the form.
- Installment purchases, expenses split with a friend, tags, buying and selling items, and money lent to or borrowed from people can't be entered through the assistant; use the New entry form for those.
- It can't edit or delete an existing entry. You do that on the Transactions page.
- The chat is not kept. Reload the page and the old messages are gone; the entries you saved stay in your ledger.
Where does your voice go?
Your recording, what you type, the names of your accounts and categories, and a short summary of the records you repeated in the last 90 days go to the Wiozen API to produce an answer. Wiozen Ledger keeps neither the audio file nor the chat. The assistant and privacy guide and the privacy notice have the details.
Which plan has it?
The assistant is on both plans. The free plan has 10 assistant messages a day, 1 account and 30 records a month, with no transfers between accounts and no credit card accounts. Pro has 100 a day and every section open. Each message counts once; in a voice message, turning your voice into text counts once more. Every new account gets 14 days of Pro without a card; after that Pro is $12.99 a year or $1.99 a month in Türkiye and $39.99 a year or $6.99 a month elsewhere. Details are on the pricing page.
Frequently asked questions
- Is everything I say written to my ledger straight away?
- No. The assistant first shows an entry card. Until you press Save it is only a suggestion; press Cancel and nothing is written.
- Which languages does the voice assistant understand?
- English and Turkish. It listens and answers in the language the app is set to.
- Does it pull in my bank transactions?
- No. Wiozen Ledger never connects to a bank or card. You say or type the expense and the assistant prepares the entry.
- How long can a recording be?
- Up to 30 seconds. You can say up to five entries in one message; for a longer list, record a few times.
- Can I use it like an app on my phone?
- Yes. Add the site to your home screen from the browser and it opens like an app; the middle button of the bottom menu goes straight to the assistant. The browser needs microphone permission.
